Ellie loves to feed herself and there’s a large part of me that encourages this independence. However the cleanup that we’re left with can become monumental and I swear that greasy tomato sauce is the worst. And rice. Rice is also the worst.

I recently read The Art of Photography by Bruce Barnbaum and a big thing that stuck with me was that he often would photograph his landscapes with more of an abstract approach rather than simply documenting the details. Photography is not only a documentary medium but a powerful communicator which can be highly manipulated in order to translate the artist’s vision. I’m finding the biggest hill to climb at this point in my journey is refining my own vision for each and every photograph and situation and linking that vision with the best way to communicate it. It was with this train of thought that I took my macro lens outside to see what I could find. I think the final photograph of the series did the best at representing my vision of this particular flower.

Here we are closing in quickly on Ellie’s first birthday and I have to say that this age has got to be the cutest. She still isn’t crawling yet but at least that makes her easier to photograph!

Brushing Off the Rust

So I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately and not as much shooting. I’m blaming the election. And Twitter. Who knew politics could be so distracting. Now that it’s over and there’s a full four years until the next one (provincially at least) I can get back to doing the things that are a bit less frustrating. I have finally got myself fixated onto an idea for a personal project and since it is still in its infancy I haven’t actually picked up my camera to shoot more than 2 minutes for quite some time. Well tonight I decided that had to come to an end and took all three kiddos outside and hauled the camera out with me. We only had time for a quick walk to the park but it was enough to get me started. It’s amazing how rusty I felt, how most of the photographs turned out to be first class mediocre. Oh well. And since I’m committed to documenting this photographic journey of mine I feel it is my responsibility to share the photographs that don’t necessarily have me feeling all giddy alongside the ones that do. Hopefully the “giddy shots” won’t be too long in coming. One other note is that I took along my 16-35mm lens instead of my go-to 50mm to try something new. This is a lens I have loved from the moment I purchased it and adored once I upgraded to the full frame camera. So sharp and reliable and it always tells a story.

Wyatt is in love with all things Star Wars. He fights fierce battles out of doors with the other young Padawans in the neighbourhood and thinks Luke Skywalker is the coolest. Unfortunately for Shannon, she usually ends up being Darth somebody. It has been awhile since I have done a photo session with just Wyatt and so I’ve been brainstorming up ideas for one. This is the one that popped into my head last minute. I tried the first shots in our basement with basically no ambient light and used the light sabre as the main light source. Unfortunately it didn’t put out as much light as I thought it would and found that I was having to push my camera’s ISO to the limit, so far that the images are nearly unusable. This being the case I moved to using my softbox with my Canon’s Speedlight fired using Pocket Wizards. I had to coach Wyatt to give me a strong stance since his natural pose was a little fairy-esque. He got it eventually .
